SILVER SNOOPY AWARD

Last week Doran received a Silver Snoopy Award. We have been waiting for some pictures that were taken during the Banquet night and the next day actual Awards. Still waiting. We are not allowed to take cameras out there or I would have been snapping up a storm. But when I got today's paper there was an article all about it so I decided to go ahead and put this in and add the pictures later. Last Tuesday night they treated all the recipients and their guests to a nice dinner at the Training Center up Ogden canyon. Then the following day the guests were invited to go out to work for the awards ceremony. It was nice to ride out there with him. They presented them with the Silver Snoopy Award and pin. Then we were treated to a nice lunch and then a tour. After the tour, Doran took me to see his messy desk. It was a wonderful day to spend with him and honor him for his hard work. Box Elder residents receive NASA's Silver Snoopy award

Nine ATK employees from Box Elder County were recently presented NASA's distinguished Silver Snoopy award by astronauts Robert L. Behnken and Michael J. Foreman.

This honor is the most prestigious award given by NASA to individuals who have given a significant contribution to the human space flight program. Each Silver Snoopy pin, given as part of the award, has been launched into space aboard a recent Space Shuttle flight.

Award recipients include Tom Burnham, Ken Firth, Ronald Francom, James Furniss, David Lefgren, Glen A. Ricks, James Shelley, Bryan Smith and Norman Watson. Six other ATK employees will also be receiving this award. All told, over 340 years of service to the human space flight program will be honored with the Silver Snoopy on Wednesday.

Originally established during the Apollo era, the Silver Snoopy is the only award presented by NASA's astronaut office. It is designed to recognize employees of NASA, its industry partners and other government agencies based on individual performance that contributes to the safety and success of the Space Shuttle program.

The award is reserved for those who are regarded as the best of the best in their respected fields. Less than one percent of the space industry's workforce receives the award annually.

These employees join an elite group recognized for their individual efforts to improve the safety and quality of the Space Shuttle's Reusable Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM) segments manufactured by ATK Launch Systems in Utah. The RSRMs have been used on every Shuttle launch since its initial flight in 1981.

A larger five-segment version of the RSRM will be used to propel NASA's new crew launch vehicle the Ares I, into space. Ares I will replace the Shuttle, when it retires in 2010, to service the International Space Station and later return to the moon, Mars and beyond.
